Beyond Sustainability
With the massive growth of the cruise industry, more and more cruise liners have been introducing a range of ecological initiatives to lower their environmentally impact. But in a resource-constrained world the linear economy of 'take, make and dispose' is actually unsustainable. There is a better way; reshaping businesses so that products are made to be made again in a circular fashion as seen in nature. This principle, the Cradle to Cradle® principle, is inspired by nature's continuous cycle. Desso, a leading European carpet and sports pitches manufacturer has been creating carpet according to the Cradle to Cradle® principle since 2008.
Viking Line Cruises is a cruise line which is fully committed to sustainability at many different levels. It is vital that carpets are recyclable, and it is up to us and the customer to ensure that the recycling actually takes place. Under the Cradle to Cradle®commitment, Desso has introduced a take back programme called Restart®where Desso collects used carpets from their clients, ensuring that they can be properly reprocessed.
Desso has taken back the old carpet from Viking Line ships Amorella, Mariella and Grace, so that the carpet can be recycled and reused. Viking Line has received a certificate with the take back of the carpet. This will ensure the recycling actually takes place and that their old carpet doesn’t influence nature negatively.
